Contextual Learning
Learning new words in context helps you understand their meaning and usage in real-life situations. To practice contextual learning, it’s a good idea to read articles (and other materials) focused on your interests.
Active Recall
This involves actively trying to remember the definition of a word rather than just reading or listening to it. You can use flashcards for this purpose. Flashcard apps are a good tool that leverages this cognitive principle.
Spaced repetition
This involves reviewing words at increasing intervals over time. This technique is also used by some language learning and flashcard apps (we use it in our LinguaLift lessons as well).
Metacognition
This involves thinking about your own learning process. Reflecting on how you learn words best can help you improve your vocabulary learning strategy.
Engaging your imagination
Creating stories or images that relate to the words you’re learning can make the words more memorable. As an example, you can come up with stories that explain why words are what they are.
Using search engines and special dicitonaries to learn vocabulary in context
Use Google or any other search and/or Google Images to check whether you’re using new words in the right context.
Using mnemonics and the ‘Memory Palace’ technique
This technique involves translating difficult-to-memorize information into a form that the brain can digest and retain better. The ‘memory palace’ technique involves drawing a ‘floorplan’ and ‘stations’.
Reading and Listening
These are fundamental ways to learn new words. You can read popular literature, relevant blog posts, or listen to audiotapes or audiobooks in your target language.
Using vocabulary apps
There are numerous vocabulary apps that can help you build your vocabulary. Examples include various vocabulary builders. We also have it in our every course at LinguaLift.
Creating a learning environment
You can create an inspiring and study-friendly environment wherever you are. For example, you can buy magazines or books in the new language, watch movies, and cook the local food.
